Bea took off her riding hat, Keira dropped her shopping bag on the grass, and they both scrambled over the gate.
âSandy, are you all right?â Bea ran across the paddock.
Sandy flattened her ears and backed away. Then she tossed her head and whinnied as the girls drew closer. Bea threw her arms around the ponyâs neck. âIâm sorry the snake scared you!â
The pony stayed quite still, and when Bea released her, she backed away a little more.
âYouâve lost your saddle, too,â said Bea. âYou must have galloped so fast it fell off! Maybe I didnât strap it on properly.â
âShe must have jumped over the fence to get back in.â Keira stroked the pony gently. âThatâs quite a big jump for such a small pony!â
âWeâd better tell the people who live here that sheâs come home. They must have missed her.â Bea gazed around the empty farmyard. She couldnât shake off the feeling that something wasnât right. Why hadnât the farmer come out to meet them?
The girls had just begun to climb over the fence into the farmyard when a large black dog rushed out of a barn, barking wildly.
Bea stopped with one leg swung over the fence. âHello!â she called toward the farmhouse. âCan you call off your dog? Weâve come to talk to you.â
âItâs about your pony,â added Keira.
But no one appeared, and the dog began growling and jumping up at the fence.
âMaybe no oneâs home,â said Keira. âBut we can come back and talk to Sandyâs owner later. At least sheâs safe for now.â
Bea frowned. âWhat if this is the wrong place? I donât think I can leave Sandy here unless I know for sure that itâs her real home.â
âBut she jumped right over the fence into this field!â said Keira. âI thought you wanted to find her owner.â
âI do!â Bea flushed. âBut how do we know she belongs here without speaking to anyone? I think I should take her back to the palace.â
Keira patted the ponyâs neck. âDonât you think youâre just trying to keep the pony for yourself?â
âIâm not!â Bea shook back her dark, curly hair. âIâm trying to do the best thing for Sandy.â
Keira put her hand on Beaâs arm. âDonât be upset, Bea! Itâs just that she seems so happy here. Why donât we come and check on her after the garden party?â
Bea sighed. âI guess youâre right.â She checked her watch. âUh-oh! I said Iâd be back by two oâclock for the party, and itâs half past two already.â She gave the pony another hug. âBye, Sandy! I promise Iâll check on you later.â
Sandy gave a snort and went back to grazing the grass. Keira and Bea climbed over the fence and ran down the lane. When they reached the palace gates, people were pouring into the royal garden, wearing their best clothes and sun hats. Even more people were streaming up the hill from Savara, and many of them were carrying salads and baskets of cupcakes to add to the picnic food. There was a happy buzz of chatter.
